In ancient China, people called the hottest 30 days in summer “伏(Fu)” and the first 10 days named “Tou(head) Fu”, the second 10 days named “Zhong Fu” and the last 10 days named “Mo(end) Fu”. The original meaning of the character “伏(Fu)” refers to lie on the stomach and keep still, which is also the guideline for people to spend the hottest summer days.

The San Fu Schedule in 2015:

Tou Fu: 13th, July ——23th. July

Zhong Fu: 24th, July —— 4th, August

How to keep healthy during San Fu

Firstly, do not do sports or stay outside during the high temperature daytime, otherwise you will lose water easily and get a heat stroke. The best drinks are not cold drinks but fresh plain boiled water, it will be better to drink the water with a little bit salt. What’s more, the best fruit and vegetable are watermelon and wax gourd.

Secondly, it is not wise to stay in a low temperature room for a long time and it is better not to sleep with the air-conditioner turned on, in case you catch a cold.

Thirdly, due to the hot and humid environment, keeping food and drinks clean is necessary. Try not to eat raw and cold food, for raw food material are polluted easily and cold drinks and ice cream will have bad influence on appetite and result in diarrhea commonly.

What about the AC? Limit it! Big temperature differences between the nicely cooled air-conditioned inside and to the sizzling hot outside temperatures has a negative effect on your immune system, leading to symptoms like headache, coughing and running nose. The best temperature from the doctor is 28 degree Celsius.

What do Chinese people eat during San Fu?

As an old saying goes ”Tou Fu Jiaozi, Er Fu Mian, San Fu Laoping tan Jidan”, that means dumplings is good for the first 10 days, noodle is the best food for the second 10 days and pancake with egg is good for the last 10 days. This tradition came from the Sanguo era, 2000 years ago.

Otherwise, people get angry easily in high temperature so take some fruit like bitter melon, tomato, cucumber and watermelon. Other food, like milk, duck meat are also great options to cool down.
