Shaolin Kung Fu (功夫- gongfu) refers to a collection of Chinese martial arts that claim affiliation with the Shaolin Monastery in Henan.

After centuries of developing combat techniques, kung fu was codified into a system of self-defense. Now ist is a popular synonym for what are considered the external Chinese martial arts.

But Shaolin Kung Fu is not just about fighting; it is about balance, fitness and developing a strong inner-self or “qi” (气). The training in each “school” or “house” of Kung Fu is disciplined and rigorous and starts at a very early age for some. Some sects develop training associated with animal mimicry, traditional Chinese philosophy, religion and legends.
